Are you a gardener? Do you plant your crops from seeds? If you grow your family’s foods – or just enjoy playing in the dirt – you probably want to produce the healthiest, safest foods possible.
Unfortunately, GMO seeds are extremely popular – and quite dangerous. In order to grow the best plants possible, you really need organic seeds.
Why Are Organic Hard to Come By?
These days, buying non-GMO seeds is more challenging than ever. In the old days, there were tons of ma and pa companies that sold organic, non-GMO varieties. Large companies like Monsanto were known for their roundup ready, GMO corn and soybeans – but that’s it. They hadn’t seeped into other areas of produce.
Now, the seed industry is experiencing consolidation. The agro giants are buying up the small ma and pa establishments at an alarming rate. In fact, you’ll have a hard time finding seeds that weren’t produce by companies like Monsanto.
Why is This Bad?
Obviously, the overabundance of GMO seeds is alarming. Most of us farm girls want organic products – not chemically laden plants.
But it goes beyond that. Now, there is a significant decrease in the variety of seeds available. And since the best way to keep insects and disease at a minimum is through the use of plant diversity, you can see how this new development is frightening.
Where to Get Seeds
While it may be more difficult to find non-GMO seeds now, it isn’t impossible. Take your time and do some research. There are still companies out there who sell organic products. For example, Fedco, Johnny’s, Seeds of Change, High Mowing Organic Seeds, and Wild Garden Seed are just a few.
Unfortunately, you will need to order your seeds online from one of these organic distributors. If you just walk into a big box store and grab something off the rack, you’re almost guaranteed to find your seeds are GMO – and probably come from Monsanto.
